The scope of Oman’s international trade is expanding not only with various GCC states but also with a considerable number of countries throughout the world. Oman has a dynamic private sector in which overseas firms are encouraged to make investments, create jobs for the local population and improve productivity. Oman has been a member of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) since 2000, and in turn, WTO’s consistent protection of intellectual property and market access are, along with favorable tax management, making Oman a dependable trading partner and an attractive destination for foreign investments.
Oman has developed a long-term strategy which promises greater efficiency and global competitiveness. Oman has also ratified Free Trade Agreement(Oman/USFTA)with the United States in October 2006 which came into force in both countries on 1 January 2009. Under the Oman/USFTA, the US and Oman provide reciprocal duty-free access for most originating goods and will phase out tariffs on the remaining originating goods within ten years. The FTA allows 100% ownership of Omani companies by US companies.
